Terrain Perception

Terrain can be unpredictable, unstructured and untraversable making it one of the biggest obstacles for Autonomous Unmanned Ground Vehicles as it could cause them to become stuck, rendering them useless. Terrain perception is therefore paramount to successful navigation especially in unknown conditions.

The ‘Terrain Sensing Wheel’ enhances the system’s terrain perception by using eight hundred sensors embedded across the wheel surface to take actual measurements of the wheel-terrain interaction. This data can then be used by the vehicle to make real-time traversal decisions, giving it greater success when operating in unforgiving conditions
